It is in located in low-lying plains and comprise savannah, woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes with a comprehensive program to grow it into a world-class safari destination in partnership with African Parks.

It is a destination for game viewing, and steps to ensure the Big Five roam the park in greater numbers are in process and poaching highly controlled. A den of lions from South Africa has settled in breeding successfully and introduced 18 eastern black rhinos. Other animals include buffalo, elephant, antelope, zebra, giraffe, baboons, monkeys, an incredible more than 490 bird species

A boat trip on Lake Ihema is the highlight at Akagera, with schools of hippos, Nile crocodiles and lots of waterbirds on an island in the middle of the lake. Trained guides at the park are viable to take you around. Accommodation options at the park include: Safari lodges, a bush camp in the north at select periods, and camping at specific locations.
