Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kanombe International Airport / Kigali

Arrive early morning. The Company driver will pick you from the airport and transfer you to Akagera National Park, four and a half hours drive. Arrive late afternoon. Have lunch and in the afternoon, take boat cruise on the river to see schools of hippos, water bids and much more. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Akagera National Park It covers an area of 100,000-hectare located in the eastern part of Rwanda, bordering Tanzania. Don’t miss the most scenic savannah in East Africa: open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains. Enjoy the incredible development Akagera park has undergone in the recent years including total elimination of animal poaching. The black rhinoceros were re-introduced in 2017 which has diversified the attractions at the park including a boat cruise on the river.

Day 2: Akagera National Park

After breakfast at 0700, go for a game drive with a trained park guide. Enjoy the fascinating landscape, view a range of wildlife including buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, spotted hyena, zebra and more. The park also boasts almost 500 species of birds including the spectacular shoebill with its implausibly massive bill and the near-endemic red-faced barbet. You will carry a packed lunch to have at a suitable spot. More game viewing in the afternoon. In the evening return to the lodge.

Day 3: Akagera National Park To Nyungwe Nationala Park

Depart the lodge early at 0730 for a long drive to Nyungwe national park, a 7-hour drive. It will take you through the scenic countryside via trading centers as well as village communities and farmlands. Arrive late afternoon.

Day 4: Nyungwe National Park

This morning activity will take you to see the chimpanzees. After breakfast at 0730, depart for the park offices for registration and briefing before the walk begins at 0830 into the Nyungwe Forest. Led by your guide, walk through stunning tea plantations before entering the thick luscious forest. There are over 13 species of monkey found in the forest and excellent birding opportunities with over 100 species of butterflies and the occasional chameleon. The excursion can last from one to four hours but you will definitely hear the chimpanzees from the moment you enter the forest. When you find them, you will stay in their presence for an hour watching them play, fight and eat and go about their business. Return to the lodge. Relax and enjoy the surroundings. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Nyungwe to Lake Kivu

Transfer along the beautiful coastal road to Lake Kivu, Serena Hotel. It is a three-hour dive and offers some of Rwanda’s most beautiful scenery. Look out over Lake Kivu’s hundred islands and beautiful shores. The Serena Hotel on the north shore of Lake Kivu provides beautiful views of the lake and the Congo region and you may choose it for your stay. In the afternoon you may go kayaking, canoeing and swimming in the lake. Mountain biking opportunities around Lake Kivu and the surrounding area are also available.

Day 6: Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park

Spend the morning relaxing at the Lake before transferring to Volcanoes National Park mid-afternoon. It is 2 hours’ drive. Relax at your hotel/ Safari lodge near Volcanoes National Park.

DAY 7: Volcanoes National Park: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park.

Wake up at sunrise and have breakfast by 0700 and drive the short journey to the park headquarters where briefing, porters and tea and coffee will be given before starting the adventure into the forest. Local ports can be arranged and help with the guide to complete the gorilla tracking experience.
Tracking can be between one hour to six hours depending on what family group is assigned. You will spend one hour with the gorillas – sometimes moving around to stay within their view. The guide will ensure you are in the best spots to take the most beautiful pictures and experience the breathtaking experience properly. Return to your hotel / Safari lodge. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 8: Volcanoes National Park to Kigali

Golden monkey tracking: This is an experience not to be missed. The hike will take you to see the monkeys which are fun and adventurous. You will also explore the forest some more. The read tailed monkey has bright orange shades, they are indigenous to the region and more elusive than the gorillas and these fast-moving monkeys will certainly keep you on your toes. The walk may take up to two to three hours. Return to your hotel/ safari lodge to freshen up before driving to Kigali in the afternoon
Arrive in time to check in for your late-night flight back home.
