Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival At Kanombe. Kigali International Airport

Airport pick up by our driver and transfer to the hotel.

Meals And Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at the Hotel

Day 2: Kigali City Tour

After breakfast at 0900, go for Kigali city tour. Places to visits include:

  1. Kigali Genocide memorial site where over 250,000 genocide victims were put to rest in mass graves
  2. The Belgian camp where 10 UN peacekeepers were killed before the start of Genocide trying to protect the late Prime Minister.
  3. The Campaign against Genocide Museum at the Parliamentary Building details the plans undertaken for the Genocide against the Tutsi to be stopped.
  4. Take a lunch break. In the afternoon, visit the crats village, and the fruit markets. Back to your hotel, Dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Kigali To Akagera National Park

Depart the hotel after breakfast at 0800 for a 4-hour dive to the park. Have a short game drive and proceed to the lodge, check in and have lunch. In the evening take a boat ride on Lake Ihema to see schools of hippos, giant crocodiles, buffaloes and lots of water birds.
Return to the lodge. Dinner and over night

Transfer to Akagera National Park – arrival and briefing followed by a Game drive (Opportunity to see over 12 species of antelopes, over 525 species of birds including the rare ones such as the shoe bill stock, papyrus gonolek and the big 5 i.e., Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant) to mention but a few. The park has the highest concentration of birds per square kilometer, very beautiful undulating landscapes, high species numbers and endemic species plus historical and cultural sites inside the park. In the afternoon drive to Lake Ihema for a thrilling boat cruise to see schools of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles, buffaloes, water birds, etc.

Day 4: Akagera National Park

Today day enjoy a full day game drive in the morning and afternoon. You carry a packed lunch to have in the wild and maximize your opportunities of animal sightings. An early start at 0700 will enable you spot the big five: lions, elephants’ other species like antelopes such as the eland cape and roan antelopes the topi, some of the 525-bird species including 4 Albertine rift endemics, reptiles, amphibians, plants, magnificent landscapes, historical sites and much more. Return to the lodge late evening. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Akagera National Park To Nyungwenational Park

Depart the lodge in the morning 0700 and drive to Nyungwe via Kigali. You will drive 2.5hrs from Akagera to Kigali, have a stop in Kigali for a quick snack and break form sitting in the vehicle. Proceed on your drive to Nyungwe National Park. Enroute visit the King’s palace and traditional Rwanda home; the Ethnographic Museum in Butare. Learn about Rwanda’s kingdoms while experiencing some colonial influences through their architecture. Arrive at Nyungwe Park late afternoon.

Nyungwe national park is the largest tropical afro Montane rainforest east or central Africa and a rainforest and receives over 2000mm of rain each year and its Rwanda’s largest water catchment area and its home to 2/3rds of all Rwanda’s water. The forest also feeds both the river Congo and the River Nile with water. Nyungwe is also home to over 300 different bird species, many butterflies, orchids, 75 mammal species including the 13 primates, and there have also been the sightings of the golden monkeys.

Day 6: Nyungwe National Park

To day you will explore the hidden treasures at Kamiranzovu waterfall. You will visit different locations in the park and enjoy the fauna and flora found in Nyungwe forest. The day ends with one of the best tourism highlights of Nyungwe: the canopy walkway. This canopy is a 70m high artificial bridge which allows you to view the forest from the top, get chance to see different species of birds, etc.
Return to your accommodation in the evening. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 7: Chimpanzee Trekking In Nyungwe & Transfer To Kibuye

Wake up to an early breakfast at 0600 then drive to the edge of the forest where chimpanzee trekking starts, as you hike you will be hearing their deafening screams, their hoots, and cackles. The chimpanzees move both on the ground and in the trees. You will spend one hour in the chimpanzee’s presence. Learning more about them from the ranger guide and taking pictures. Out of the forest, you will have a lunch break at a convenient stop before embarking on the two-hour drive to Kibuye at Lake Kivu.

Lake Kivu is nestled in a series of interwoven and undulating hills and offering visitors spectacular views. Its islands and the stunning surrounding countryside make it one of the best of Rwanda’s hidden treasures.

Check into your accommodation and freshen-up. Transfer to the shores of the Lake Kivu to enjoy a boat ride. Visit the Napoleon and Amahoro Islands to see a number of colorful birds, clouds of big fruit bats and learn the history of the islands.
Return to your accommodation. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 8: Lake Kivu To Volcanoes National Aprk

This morning after breakfast at 0800, visit to the Environment Museum for one hour. It is concerned with conservation of different vegetations. It has displays of fauna and flora and the geographical changes that have occurred over time.
Mid-morning, drive to Volcanoes National Park. Visit the Ibyiwacu cultural Village, get to understand the culture of the Rwandese through their daily life and knowledge of the environment, poetry, folklores, dancing, singing, pottery and the theoretical hunt gathering skills like sorghum or banana beer production.
Banana and sorghum are important staple foods in Rwanda and can be consumed as food, local beer/drinks both daily use and cultural practices during traditional weddings ceremonies, settling of disputes between community members, bonding relationship between different families much more.
Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.

DAY 9: Volcanoes National Park

This morning, you are going for the tour highlight of your trip. Gorilla tracking! After breakfast at 06:00 we transfer to the park reception to go through the registration formalities. Armed with walking sticks and lead by the park rangers, start on your walk to the forest in search of the gentle giants. Once you spot them you are allowed to spend an hour watching your closest long-lost cousin. This is perhaps one of the most breathtaking wildlife experiences on earth!!! You get so close to these awesome giant primates. The meeting with the gorillas in their natural mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience
Return to the lodge.

Optional: if you are still feeling adventurous and strong visit Musanze Cave or the beautiful twin lakes – Burera and Ruhondo.
Return to the lodge. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 10: Volcanoers National Park To Kigali - Airport

This park has so much to offer. This morning you will experience another adventure activity to see the famous golden monkeys. Transfer to the entrance of the park early this morning for a guided walk to glance at the Golden Monkeys residing in Volcanoes National Park. They are beautiful and endangered primates which have become quite habituated to human visits, making it possible to observe them closely. At mid-day, depart for Kigali with a lunch stop at a place of your choice. Continue to Kigali International airport in time for check in for your home bound flight.
